Understanding Trauma and Resilience from Scholars who were Previously Incarcerated

A Healing-Centered and Trauma-Informed Approach to Building Community

3 CE Credits - $60

Instructors: Susan Hess, MSW, LCSW-IL and Yehudah Pryce, MSW

Course Description

This webinar is for mental health professionals who are interested in understanding trauma and resilience on a deeper level and for those who are interested in supporting participants who were formerly incarcerated. The vast majority of such participants have experienced prior trauma, which is compounded by the trauma of incarceration itself.  Exposure to trauma increases the likelihood of future criminal behaviors, arrests, imprisonment, recidivism, and additional trauma.

It is critical that mental health competencies go beyond an individual level and address needs at the system and organization levels. Participants will benefit from professionals who develop a social justice alliance, in which a healing-centered and trauma-informed lens is practiced. Social justice activism can transform traumatic experiences into transcendent narratives that engender healing. Via storytelling, this webinar will explore how Unchained Scholars, a group of formerly incarcerated MSW, DSW and PhD students have contributed to their own healing and liberation by building awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion in an educational institution.
